Despite previously announcing a hiatus, the popular Insidious franchise is gearing up for another installment and I’m super excited.
In my opinion, Insidious is one of the horror movies that’s actually scary.
Sony has officially slated the sixth film for release on August 29, 2025, just over a year after Jason Blum, founder of Blumhouse Productions, suggested the series would take a long break. Blum’s initial statement came before the remarkable box office success of Insidious: The Red Door, which undoubtedly influenced the decision to continue the series.
Here’s everything we know so far.
A Surprising Revival
Blum had previously mentioned in an interview with Discussing Film that Insidious: The Red Door was intended to be the last film “for a while,” anticipating a lengthy rest for the franchise. However, the movie’s impressive performance, grossing over $189 million worldwide and becoming one of the highest-grossing horror films of 2023, demonstrated the enduring popularity and fanfare for the series.
The Red Door not only marked Patrick Wilson’s directorial debut but also outperformed all previous Insidious movies at the box office. With this success, it was clear that audiences were still very much invested in the terrifying tales of the Insidious universe.

Future of the Franchise
Sony has yet to disclose specific details about the sixth film’s plot or direction.
The Red Door concluded the storylines of the Lambert family, with Rose Byrne reprising her role to help tie up loose ends. Given this closure, the next movie might explore new characters and narratives, similar to how the third and fourth films shifted focus to Lin Shaye’s Elise Rainier and other new characters.

Origins and Legacy
The Insidious series, created by Leigh Whannell and James Wan (also known for the Saw franchise), began in 2010 with a film that quickly became a modern horror classic.
It introduced the Lambert family and their son, Dalton, who becomes ensnared in the sinister realm known as “The Further.” Since its inception, the franchise has grossed over $730 million globally against a combined production budget of $42.5 million.
Following the original film, the series expanded with Insidious: Chapter 2, Insidious: Chapter 3, Insidious: The Last Key, and the recent 2023 release, Insidious: The Red Door.
Additionally, a spinoff film titled Thread: An Insidious Tale, starring Mandy Moore and Kumail Nanjiani, is currently in development, further enriching the Insidious universe.
Potential Returning Cast
While the plot details for Insidious 6 remain under wraps, fans speculate about the possible return of key cast members.
Patrick Wilson (Josh Lambert), Rose Byrne (Renai Lambert), Ty Simpkins (Dalton Lambert), Lin Shaye (Elise Rainier), Leigh Whannell (Specs), and Angus Sampson (Tucker) are among the actors who might reprise their roles.
Will Insidious 6 Be the Final Installment?
The Red Door’s box office success suggests the franchise still has a future.
Although the fifth movie seemed to conclude the Lamberts’ story, the flickering lights above the sealed door to The Further at the film’s end hinted at lingering evil. This could mean new, unsuspecting characters might encounter this malevolent realm, or the next movie could even serve as a prequel, exploring Josh Lambert’s complex childhood with astral projection.
A New Beginning?
The confirmation of Insidious 6 demonstrates Sony and Blumhouse’s faith in the project.
Given the finality of the previous movie, it’s unlikely they would greenlight another attempt at concluding the franchise so soon. There is hope that if the new movie succeeds, it will mark a new beginning for the horror series. Co-creator James Wan’s relationship with Blumhouse could facilitate his return as a producer, though it’s currently unclear whether co-creator Whannell or director Patrick Wilson will be involved.
