The Exorcist (1973)
Let’s start with the most obvious.
“The Exorcist” directed by William Friedkin, contains one of the most infamous scenes in horror film history, known as the “spider-walk” scene. In it, Regan, possessed by a demon, descends a staircase in a disturbingly unnatural crab-walk posture while covered in blood.
This scene was deemed too shocking and disturbing for the 1973 audiences and was initially removed from the theatrical release, only to be restored in the director’s cut years later.

A Clockwork Orange (1971)
Directed by Stanley Kubrick, “A Clockwork Orange” is notorious for its stark portrayal of ultraviolence and moral decay.
One particular scene that faced heavy censorship involves Alex, the protagonist, and his gang breaking into a woman’s house and assaulting her, culminating in a brutal scene choreographed to “Singin’ in the Rain.” This scene was significantly edited or completely cut in various countries due to its disturbing content and the way it juxtaposed cheerful music with violent acts.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
“The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” by Tobe Hooper is a seminal work in horror that pushed the boundaries of on-screen violence.
Despite its reputation, the film is not overly gory, but its intense atmosphere and psychological horror led to several cuts. The most notable involves Leatherface’s hook-hanging scene and a scene where he stuffs a woman into a freezer while she’s still living—both were edited to avoid an X rating. The raw, unpolished filming style added to the sense of realism, making it even more unsettling.

Hostel (2005)
Eli Roth’s “Hostel” is part of a unique genre of horror films known for depicting extreme torture scenes just like the “Saw” movies.
One of the most graphic scenes, which was cut to secure an R rating instead of NC-17, involves a character getting his Achilles tendons sliced and then attempting to walk, only to fall in a bloody, agonizing heap. This scene, along with others, was targeted for being too graphic, testing the limits of what could be shown in mainstream cinemas.
Cannibal Holocaust (1980)
“Cannibal Holocaust” is one of the most infamous horror films ever made, primarily because of its realistic portrayal of violence and cruelty.
Directed by Ruggero Deodato, this film faced bans in several countries. The most controversial aspect was the genuine animal slaughter shown on screen, which led to outrage and legal issues for the filmmakers. Additionally, the graphic depiction of cannibalism and violence led to scenes being cut or edited heavily to allow the film to be released in various markets.

Saw III (2006)
“Saw III” continues the grisly and torturous legacy of the Saw franchise.
One particular scene that was cut to avoid an NC-17 rating involved a graphic brain surgery scene where a man is awake during the procedure. The detailed depiction of drilling into the skull and some subsequent manipulations proved too intense for censors, and the scene was trimmed down significantly to secure an R rating.
Ichi the Killer (2001)
Takashi Miike’s “Ichi the Killer” has gained a cult status for pushing the boundaries of violence and sadism.
One of the most graphic scenes that had to be censored shows a character slicing off a part of his own tongue as a gesture of loyalty and submission. This scene, among others featuring extreme torture and violence, was edited out to allow for wider release. In some countries, the film was only available in a heavily censored form due to its extreme content.
