While upgrading their home’s insulation, a family in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania stumbled upon a macabre scene. Their house’s walls concealed dozens of animal remains, encased in newspaper from the 1930s and 1940s, complete with spices and various other objects.
The family expressed their shock and displeasure upon the discovery. Expert analysis suggested that these items were remnants of a ritual known as “Pow-wowing” or “Dutch magic,” traditionally believed to remedy illnesses.
Despite understanding the purpose behind the artifacts, the family’s ordeal wasn’t alleviated. They incurred about $20,000 in expenses due to mold and persistent odors that affected their health — costs that their insurance would not cover.
Prior inspection of the house had not hinted at such a hidden issue. The family had done their due diligence with checks for common problems, such as radon levels, but they were unprepared for such an unusual finding.
In a bind for funds, the family turned to a crowdfunding solution hoping for assistance to resolve their predicament.
